Theater at the Ohio State University
Introduction to Theater
5 sections
This course introduces students to the art and profession of theatre, its components and its contributors, with an emphasis on evaluating and appreciating live performance, theatre’s cultural importance, and its contribution to social diversity. The course culminates in a creative project where students experience the collaborative processes that make theatre work.
Craft of Acting
4 sections
The Craft of Acting teaches basic acting techniques, the art of storytelling, and expands the capacity to communicate. Students will read and discuss noteworthy plays; analyze those plays’ cultural/social impact; perform monologues and scenes; and explore and critique mandatory live (or Zoom) performances. The modern-day actor spends a good deal of time creating new works. Throughout this semester, students will also create original stories based on prompts.
Playwriting
1 section; Advanced course (5916)
While writing asks solitude and sharp discernment of the artist, this class is also ensemble-based. The students develop a writers’ community, challenge each other to grow, and learn to critique their peers’ work as well as their own. They study assigned texts and write 7 of their own 10-minute plays. The students will finish the class with a completed one-act that could be performed both in-person and virtually, and they will be able to define what it means for them to tell “important stories.”
